HOLY HUMAN FAITHS vs.UNHOLY BELIEVERS!

“HOLY” FAITHS AND THEIR “UNHOLY” BELIEVERS!

According to a UCAN report dated 21st April 2016, more tribal people choosing Christianity or less preferentially Islam over Hinduism, in India, and the writer genuinely fears if it might be abused for divisive politicking.

This is well documented with Christian tribal persons having increased in number to 10.03 million in 2011 (from a mere 6.3 million in 2001)—a 63% growth! Islam followers among tribal people have multiplied from 1.2 million to 1.8 million. Both these chunks have come from the total of 84 million (The latest figure is 104 million) Hindu tribal persons.

Of course the Indian Constitution gives you and me full authority to choose whoever faith affords us inner satisfaction, though those that we call our dear and near may violently differ in their view of the matter. They would, under the guise of camaraderie with us, like us to remain ensconced within faith A B or C.

Whenever I think of my Christian and Muslim friends and contacts-some are quite dear to my heart- I also think of those rave ancestors of theirs that veered away from their mother faith (Hinduism) and wooed one of these two imported faiths. It must surely have been a life and death challenge for them to go away from their traditional faiths! Many prospective escapees might have been summarily done to death to by their own people—a proto-version of what “honor killing” is today!!

Don’t elevate any specific faith above others for these faiths are all man-made and the result of some thinking by our neo-Neanderthal ancestors who must have felt that you and I would be lost sheep unless we are provided with some route directions and a route map!

If you read holy texts—holy to the believers but unholy to the believers of other faiths-you can see that every such text is a mosaic of good and not so good ideas or heavily antiquated notions.

Both the Quran and the Bible have texts that contain numerous hind sights at that past time that the book got compiled from many sources. Both texts contain sound advice and counsel too. If many Hindus felt like choosing these faiths it might surely have been because of the ease in comprehensibility of these texts too.

But it is equally true that these that profess to be followers of these imported or indigenous faiths-Hindus too no less—fail to rise to the true expectations of these texts in not only thought speech and action but also behavior!

If a faith has an Old Man of the Sea clinging to its back, and refusing to let go, its none other than the community of followers that ostensibly claim to follow the faith and what it professes but never does so in the genuine spirit and certainly tends to misuse and abuse it too.

Christianity got broken up into >30000 sects—we in India know only the major ones with larger number of followers—because it has been the tendency of some of its believers to pick out some passages away from the closely integrated and organically interwoven text and then give these excerpts the meaning that they would like.

The consequence has been that if Sect A makes a hue and cry and beats their chests and sweats profusely during their loud prayer sessions, Sect B never does so. Sect A claims that Jesus will return on the Seventh Day—which specific day they are not sure—and Section D says that Satan Worship—Black Mass– is also given license by the mainstream Christianity!

The dreaded KKK-Ku Klux Klan-also comprised only Christians but not those that regularly went to church! They believed in a white race supremacy and very like the Rednecks in Europe—and used to murder Blacks in the US.

Islam, whose known sects are Sunnis, Shias and Ahmediyas, also has many other minor sub sects both globally and within our nation. As far as we know Sunnis are almost always at love lost with the Shias and they even murder each other for fun. The Ahmediyas in India live in the Lakshadweep archipelago and so they are relatively safe from the majority sects.

But the Taliban who set about putting into practice a quite narrow definition of the faith, earned a bad reputation for violently opposing girls’ education, women empowerment and for insisting on patriarchal conventions. Nay they almost ruined that nation Afghanistan by jeopardizing school education in numerous ways!

According to them—the Taliban sought to implement a terribly patriarchal version of the faith– girls were to be prohibited from getting educated in any manner so that they would consider themselves easily saleable chattel capable of pushing out babies by the dozen to equally illiterate and violent men!

The social and community specific evil called Talaq made the lives of women horribly uncertain and miserable le beyond description too.NO Muslim (tribal) kingdom—not even Saudi Arabia) ever lifted a little finger to oppose all this.

Ms. Malala Yousefzai had to pay a heavy price for championing the cause of education for girls. It took the distant US to send their troops to save that nation from being overrun by these Taliban nomads and warriors!

ISIL or ISIS also claim to be Muslims, like the Taliban. They go one step further in an anti- civilization direction with an entrenched faith in mass killings, imposition of sex slavery for life, beheading,  ethnic cleansing and so on.

Mind you just like the Taliban (who remain scattered in both sub-continental Pakistan and mountainous
Afghanistan) the IS also claim that they have a distinct design for a huge empire consisting of Syria and Iraq.

Both these stupid organizations have brought the faith a really bad name globally by now. Try to migrate to the West with a Muslim identity and you are fated to know the worst form of discrimination imaginable!

Speaking of Hindus, they also don’t bother to read the Hindu scriptures and extract he real meanings from the textual material through thinking and discussion. To add insult to injury, almost all texts relating to this faith are in Sanskrit which ceased to be a vibrant communication medium in this country many centuries ago.

So most Hindus today simply chant mechanically like zombies without really knowing what the hymns actually mean! ~

On inevitable result of this state of remaining distanced from the actual text has been of course the multiplicity of interpretations for every text and modified stories. Another has ,unfortunately enough been the over dependence of most Hindus on fake god men or god women hat claim t simply and illustrate the hard core of the faith for the commoners!

However if you make an analysis of how much these fake persons really helped towards bringing about  renaissance of the Hindu community and in giving them a route map for remaining strong and monolithic across caste distinctions, you are going to see that they haven’t done much at all.

Yes, they have set up huge establishments offering education or health but NO Hindu can expect any sort of concession or appreciation at these institutions, which have only fattened the wallets of these persons!

My point is that less than 1% of the present day followers of faiths A, B or C or D has taken pains to really understand the real meaning of these holy texts and understand the real meaning of the texts to over many months.

Very few of the religious institutions have taken pains to elucidate the prayers and hymns also.

Look at this Hadith from the Quran, (Chapter 3, Hadith No 159),

“Pass over the faults of people and ask forgiveness of God for them”

If those Taliban or IS Muslims really had read the Quran sincerely would they have chopped off so many human heads and even played football in the streets with children’s corpses?

Never!

The human faiths remain heavily burdened today with their own present-day followers who commit many fooleries in the name of the faith! All real honest believers are stranded on metaphoric Maldivian atolls in a vast boundless Pacific of colossal ignorance and purposeful malpractice and prostituted interpretations!

TO APPRECIATE A JOKE IS NO JOKE AT ALL!

UNDERSTANDING A JOKE!

Understanding a joke-any joke for that matter-presupposes a common social world; a shared inter-subjective community. There need not be an agreement about the worth of the joke itself, but it certainly presupposes the fact that a sense of humor requires a shared life world and not an individualistic, solipsistic and an atomized one.

Humor is therefore highly local; it throws light on our situation, and tells us something about WHO we are, brings back to consciousness the hidden, familiarizes us with the unspoken and lingers in our mind as we spend the day!

Umberto Eco wrote an illuminating essay on something as trivial as eating peas with a fork in airline food-transforming the real and everyday into something surreal and unfamiliar!

Understanding a joke-any joke for that matter-presupposes a common social world; a shared inter-subjective community.

RK Laxman’s political cartoons,”The Common Man” used domestic everyday images of a middle class Indian family to challenge mainstream politics in the country. Although he mounts a successful challenge to politics as it is practiced, his portrayals of domesticity unknowingly reveal gendered relations within homes, for instance between the husband and the wife.

In a familiar analogy, as the Marxist commentator Richard Seymour suggests, Charlie Hebdo may be mocking the extremists but that mocking itself reveals a certain racist undertone!

Ask me what is the mechanism of humor and I would reply that it caricatures and satirizes outwardly but that its purpose is to distance us in an instant from the real, the local and the familiar and transport us to the unfamiliar in some manner. This distancing it is that helps us to better see the absurdity in our social conditions.

English philosopher Simon Critchley uses religious metaphors to suggest that laughter has a messianic and redemptive power because it can reveal a situation and also indicate how it might have changed.

But the flip side of all jokes and satires being highly context-specific and localized is that humor can also be parochial, ridiculing outsiders and foreigners.

Watching “Monty Python” now, three decades since it was made, I realize the parochial stereotyping that the film indulges in!

Across India, food the patient ingests day in and day out is taken for granted, whatever it may be, by the physicians, who confine themselves to prescribing the right chemical molecules for treatment. But then drugs alone do not succeed in decimating a major disease but also the most appropriate kid of kind of food suited to give the patient supplementary immunity against the disease germ. Boiled rice is omnipresent but this alone may not be enough for providing the needed level of immunity and resistance.

Across India you can often chance upon pretty young faces claiming to be Dieticians but then they are almost invariably kept in the wings, more for show than for actual co-consultation with an Internal Medicine physician. For indeed Dietetics and Nutrition form part of Internal medicine globally and these young women happen to be far more professional in dealing with it than the doctors whose heavy curricula never contained any sessions on dietetics at all on purpose.

Our moms know how to love their newborns of course, though often the biological dads find themselves at a loss about what to do to be decent enough towards the new guest in their family. But unfortunately giving food of some kind to the kid and keeping it well hydrated with fluids of some kind are all that they seem to know for sure. Indian parents in general presume that the task of bringing up a baby is wholly its biological mom’s territory.

Our dads start making projections of all kinds once the kid is born; if it’s a girl they start saving right away because they think of disposing of the kid through marriage .Only if it’s a boy do they look really elated and here also they flounder as parents because they fondle and mollycoddle rather too much for the baby’s comfort and its smooth development!

From the kid’s point of view after he or she gets pushed rather unceremoniously into this big bad world of ours, he doesn’t have the awareness to instruct his parents to feed him properly. Human life is graphically a steady, almost irreversible, parabolic ballistic movement from absolute helplessness to absolute independence in body and spirit and the parents; given this reality it becomes a parental obligation to rise to the small kid’s inarticulate expectations for survival among the adults in the family.

The level of physiological nutrition that a kid stands in dire need of is almost entirely in a different class from that familiar to you and me who happen to be grown-ups. And, if the parents wish their kid to remain disease proof during many years of his or her life as an adult, it’s imperative that the kid be familiarized with those food habits that will help him ward off minor illnesses too!

Colon cancer, for instance, is maximum in its incidence within one specific Hindu community, next to Muslim community. But this illness comes about primarily as a result of wrong food habits.

When a Haneefa or Harihar Iyer contracts this illness, we can see how both failed to get a proper grounding back in their childhood from their parents in what to eat and what not to! Every patent visiting a hospital falls in this group: every one of them has a medical history of parental ignorance too to reveal to you and me!

But unfortunately most parents take the kids for granted, some all the more irresponsibly so. I know many parents that proudly say that they are laboriously f**king and reproducing more kids because their Godhead wanted them to do that! Roman Catholics also seek to multiply their total population in this manner because their numbers are going down steadily they say. Some go so far as to attribute this instruction or command to the Pope himself too.

One of my late Hindu relatives carried around a long list of 15 complicated kid names, in the hope that his future partner would comply with his wishes by giving him 15 kids in succession.

Stupid indeed.

”Leave that kid on the floor and he is set to grow!” declared one close relative of mine months ago but thank God, the kid’s biological mom knew better than that!

Bringing up a kid in the most optimal manner is a maternal challenge.>90% moms fail grievously in this test too.

It can be however conquered successfully and overcome but only through, on the mother’s side, continuous principled self-updating on the Net, continuous networking and parental discussions about the kid’s strengths and weaknesses and how to overcome them. My personal observation in this area is that many Home Science and Clinical Nutrition graduates make for wonderful moms if only they don’t remain stagnant and mentally stultified.

Across India the ongoing comedy is that many hospitals have Dieticians in place in some cubicles but they are invariably left to remain stagnated with little prospect for professional growth because the hospital management—usually hard core businessmen– is totally unaware of how much they can contribute towards making a giant institutional leap overall cure rates and treatment efficacy!

In ANY illness the patient’s nutrition level is crucial. Elders say that a fever has got to be starved but this s not true at all. You need to take more fruits and vegetables while taking more fluids and some tablets!

Stand outside any public office and take note of the love handles(These are known as “tyres” in Kerala)  that all employees carry on either side of their bodies—and you get a faithful picture of the average health status of the work force in that office.

The larger the love handles, the less the employee competence because the person is given to too much consumption with too few calories getting burnt away through sweat sessions!

Aging persons also require a different kind of nutritional approach. Only professional Dieticians know all this and no patient in any hospital accosts them for counsel unless directed by a doctor who can but prescribe some pills and capsules!

Malnutrition continues to be a huge problem all over India, especially for kids from 0 to 5 and for pregnant and lactating mothers. Nutritionally unbalanced food is so easily available that no one even thinks of taking a balanced diet till some illness makes its gruesome presence felt.

It’s high time all parents—and especially those  that believe in self multiplication– also think of this aspect so vitally important for the physical and mental health of those kids born to them! Wrong nutrition in childhood years makes for behaviorally problematic kids and adults that are real social liabilities—mentally challenged persons or killer hubbies or sadistic/masochistic wives!

Cry my beloved country!

THE LESS LUCKY WOMEN OF THE SUBCONTINENT!

I am indeed shocked out of my Sunday smugness by Ms. Meha Dixit’s write-up (The Hindu 6/4/2016) on “the missing girls of Bangladesh” but then it is equally if not with more relevance applicable to ALL women and girls too born and brought up in Rural India in my observation.

Hence my modified caption for this blog on an otherwise-uneventful Sunday morning! Sorry! I can’t resist letting my steam out!

A mass infiltration of Bangladeshi Muslims is happening on the Indo-Bangla border—2220 km long excluding 259 kms of riverine border–with mostly Muslim women traffickers operating with impunity in whisking them away to this Indian soil and providing them with the forged documents.

About 30% of these persons are escapees from justice, and about 20% outright criminals of that nation. Both are well aware how Panchsheel-polluted Indian Border Policy is!

And traffickers are legion both in Indian townships and along the WB-Bangladesh border.

[West Bengal has, ever since Jyothi Basu’s days, graciously-and rather anti nationally-kept the borders porous enough for anyone to cross over too, with a minimum of BSF presence and refusal to fence the border in any manner. The late CM himself is rumored to have sneaked into India in this manner. The terribly unhygienic streets of Kolkata bear witness to this mass immigration as this writer saw for himself some years ago. Thousands of homeless immigrants live on the roadside and use the sides as a toilet. The residents of that metro seem to be too dumbfounded to be articulate about all this; may be they are more worried about their prospects of getting some Hilsa fish!]

These girls and women from our adjacent nation get sold for flesh trade in the many hundreds of brothels like Safed Gali in Pune or Kamathipura in Mumbai or Sonagatchi in Kolkata itself which milk them dry and then hurl them out as unfit for trade.

This tragedy has an Indian version certainly I am sure, The South Indian version I know firsthand. It was during my school years that I first heard about the poor young woman in my village –I think her name was Radha or something like that–getting suddenly married to a youth from Madurai in TN. Our home maid Gouri –she was a maid only in name since she was above 50!-whispered to mom about this and it was thus I overheard.

Dad and Mom suspected the intentions from the beginning but it seemed to be all right when the groom’s family—an aged man and an aged woman-not only declined to accept any dowry for the girl but also gave her an expensive 5 sovereign gold necklace as a reward “for migrating to wonderful Madurai”.

The wedding took place and the party left for TN after giving their residential address to the parents of the girl. It was all beaming smiles and gratified perspiration at the end of the ceremony. The naïve girl also looked fulfilled since the dark-skinned young man looked all right.

Within a week news spread in my Haripad neighborhood that the address given was fake and that the groom had disappeared. The girl also couldn’t be traced for many months till one male neighbor –a bangle vendor–stumbled upon the brothel in Madurai where she had been sold (without the necklace) for Rs 50000! And the information came that the young man had conducted ten more such farcical marriages in different villages in the meantime and sold the girls to this same brothel!

To return to Ms Meha, WB, which is a huge transit point for all such unfortunate or less fortunate-than-us girls and women, keeps many so-called Shelter Homes for such trafficked women. The worst affected –ad the least efficiently governed Districts are 24 Parganas North and South, Murshidabad, Malda, North Dinajpur, Nadia and Cooch Behar.

Ms. Mamata, whose only worry is about getting votes enough, turns a Nelson’s eye!

Each such woman—universally impoverished, naïve, simple-minded and eminently gullible– has a long story of being given job offers, or acting chances in the Bollywood film industry to tell you and me, if only we care to listen. All their parents have also been bribed with money (which is actually the price set for this female human body!).

These girls are also killed for their organs and often sold to many men at a time. No one cares. No rescuer comes to save them from the cages in which they have been imprisoned and glossed up for sale for an hour or so to the highest bidder to toy with.(Normally a man doesn’t get more than an hour at most since other males –and males of all ages and kinds–are waiting in the wings!

HIV spread is also naturally maximum in many of these Districts but all hospital managements claim their patients to be totally HIV-Free in their data and records!

India is a signatory to the UN Protocol to prevent Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons. Both forced labor and sex trafficking. The Parliament also has passed Criminal Law (Amendment) Act of 2013, which replaced Section 370 of the IPC and 370A which deals with trafficking in persons for exploitation purposes.

But New Delhi –ever noisy with ministers and Opposition screaming at cross purposes–can’t care less.

No BJP man, no matter how vociferous he happens to be in Modi lionizing and party glamorizing, speaks against this practice or crime out of mortal fear, lest he be decapitated with a khukri (a long knife used by Gurkhas) and hurled into the River Ganges! (Local news in Kolkata has it that the State could be ruled by a single party for many ears thanks to this queer human disposal technique!)

No Congress man—habituated to fleeing from problems rather than facing them head on and also taking them by the horns– also protests in anyway probably because of vested interests.

NO CPM party cadre also really cares. After he is not to blame since the focus is always on the party and not on making India safe.

Indian laws-copied mostly from 19th century British colonizer’s penal code—are so antiquated that they tend to punish the trafficked women far more than it does the trafficker.

The girl or woman is at once branded as a criminal for having infiltrated into this country and imprisoned for many months at a time with no hope of a hearing in a court of law.

The trafficker is given a light sentence for having committed a mistake!

When YOU read this, dear reader, you may send out a yawn, sigh for a moment in boredom, and look up at the heavens with typical indifference (since it doesn’t punch you in the face according to your view) but this is affecting hundreds of girls and women in this country without their parents or hubbies ever coming to know about it till it’s too late in the day.

The true force of this knockout blow you shall feel ONLY when your child is whisked away to some such brothel within 24 hours by that ‘friendly female neighbor who used to visit you and bring you tidbits she made at home for your child’s birthday’!

Watch Kamal Hasan’s film “Mahanadi” in the meantime!
